CHILD SPONSORSHIP IN NEPAL
Helping talented children who lack the opportunity to fulfill their potential.
Project start date: January 2012.
Planned financial commitment: €1,500 in the first year.
The funds will cover the child’s education, meals, and accommodation and will be sent directly to the school.
Supporting educational progress so that deserving young people whose families face financial difficulties can continue their studies at high-quality schools. Project location: Nepal.
In Nepal, education is free through primary school, equivalent to elementary school in Italy. Children who do particularly well at school are often unable to continue their education because of their families’ financial difficulties.
The Foundation plans to launch a child sponsorship program to enable these children to continue their studies at high-quality institutions.
A suitable institution has already been identified in Kathmandu:
St. Xavier School, founded by the Jesuit Fathers in June 1951.

Both parents have disabilities: they are deaf and unable to speak. They come from remote areas and face financial hardship.

The child of a single mother, living in severe financial hardship.

She has a brain tumor. Doctors are unable to operate because doing so would cause blindness.
Bibhuti Devkota
From a very poor family.
Bipin is in fifth grade.
He does well at school. The Tamang are one of the most disadvantaged ethnic groups.
His father is alive but lives with another wife and does not support Bipin or his mother. His mother comes from Bhojpur and works as a street cleaner, earning NPR 1,600 per month (€15). She lives in a rented room that costs NPR 1,600 per month.
The school is paying for Bipin’s meals, accommodation, and education.

Rujan Shrestha is in second grade.
He is bright and does well at school. He achieved the highest marks in his second-term examination.
His father has had no contact with him since he was little. His mother works as a domestic worker and earns NPR 3,000 per month (€28). She lives in a rented room costing NPR 1,200 per month (€11). Rujan’s mother has health problems and cannot do strenuous work. She comes from Ramechhap District, while his father’s birthplace is unknown.
The school is paying for Rujan’s meals, accommodation, and education.

Pradeep Lama (Tamang) is in fourth grade.
He does well at school. His father died five years ago. His mother comes from Kavre and works as a domestic worker, earning NPR 2,500 per month (€23). She lives in a single rented room costing NPR 1,200 per month (€11). His older brother works to help their mother.
The school is paying for Pradeep’s meals, accommodation, and education.

Dev Yonjon (Tamang) is in fourth grade. His father comes from Sindhupalchowk and is in prison. His mother comes from Rautahat and works as a domestic worker, earning NPR 2,500 per month (€23). She lives in a rented room costing NPR 1,500 per month (€13).

Mamata Pun is in second grade. She is bright and does well at school. She is diligent and achieved top marks in the 2011–2012 school year.
She receives no support from either parent. Her father went to India without leaving any contact details, and her mother remarried. Mamata was raised by her grandfather and aunt. Her grandfather is a former soldier who receives a pension. He recently became paralyzed and is unable to move. Her aunt is unmarried, and if she marries, Mamata will be left virtually alone. They live in a small rented room for which they pay NPR 13,000 per month.

Kaushiki is an only child, and her mother does not want her to board at school.

Ahmed Ramiz Rao. He is studying in class 3. He is a refugee. His family is from Pakistan. His family converted to Catholicism and his father was arrested by the Government of Pakistan and his mother, elder brother and sister took shelter in Nepal. They do not know the whereabouts of their father; probably he is killed. St. Xavier’s is educating his brother freely .

Adhitya Karki is a son of Mrs. Jamuna Karki. His father divorced with his mother last year. His father is not taking care of him for the last 5 years, so mother is taking care of Aditya Karki. He has one elder sister Shreya Karki. She is studying in class 6 in the same school. The family is staying in Jawalakhel, Lalitpur in one dark single room. The condition of room and family is very poor. Aditya is good in studies as well as in his behavior. Aditya’s mother earns very less, so it is very difficult to survive.

Anisha K.C. is studying in class 1C. Anisha K.C. is a daughter of Mrs. Pabitra K.C. Her father died when Anisha was not even born. Anisha has one elder sister. She is studying in class 10 now. She has grandmother too. The family lives in one single room at Bagdole which is in a very poor condition. Her mother works in different houses as a cleaner. Anisha is very good in studies so she can do better in future life and her behavior is also excellent.

Rupa B.K. is studying in class 1B at St. Xavier’s School, Jawalakhel. Her father died when she was just born. Her mother Rom Kumari B.K. works at one of the hostels as a cleaner. The hostel has given her one single room. Rupa is a very intelligent child and can do better in her studies. The family’s condition is extremely poor.

Opson Shrestha

Opson Shrestha is studying in class 1E at St. Xavier’s School Jawalakhel, He is good in studies. His father died in a motorcycle accident when Opson was one year old. He and his mother are not getting any support from his father’s family members, his mother decided to stay with her own father and mother. His mother is working as daily wager. She has to manage everything. The room and family’s condition is very poor because she gets very less money from the working place.

The Foundation plans to organize annual trips to Nepal for those who wish to join the project, so they can see for themselves how it works and follow the sponsored children’s educational progress firsthand.
The trip will also be an opportunity to visit this wonderful, welcoming, and peaceful country at the foot of the Himalayas.
A personal account by Erus Sangiorgi
I have just returned from Kathmandu, Nepal, where I met Father Amrit, the head of St. Xavier School, and the four children already sponsored by the Foundation.
In the collective imagination, schools in developing countries almost always appear as basic structures with mud walls, no glass in the windows, and sometimes no desks, sustained by the great love and dedication of those providing education in very difficult circumstances.
Yet St. Xavier School in Kathmandu, founded in 1951 by the Jesuit Fathers, is no different from an Italian school—in fact, it is a solid, welcoming, clean, well-organized institution offering high-quality education. It has computer rooms, a large theater, a sports center, and extensive green spaces. It welcomes 1,970 primary and secondary school children aged 6–16. Classes are mixed and are not divided by caste or social status: a minister’s child studies in the same classroom as the child of a single mother whose income barely covers basic needs. Eighty-four percent of the children are Hindu or Buddhist, 9% are Christian, and 7% are Catholic. Religious proselytizing is strictly avoided, and great respect is shown for everyone’s faith.
About half of the children’s families pay the full school fees. Other parents contribute a small amount toward schooling costs according to their financial circumstances, while the school receives no contribution at all for 270 children. Around one hundred of these children were born and live in prison with one of their parents. For several years, an agreement with the Nepalese ministry has allowed these children to be placed in the care of St. Xavier School.
