Taking care of yourself to feel more at ease with others
An educational program on hygiene and well-being, featuring an inclusive hairdressing and beauty workshop and sessions in a thermal pool. (For young people with disabilities aged 15–20)

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

The philosophy behind this project is based on a holistic view of people with disabilities as individuals with concerns, needs, desires, and aspirations like everyone else. This includes the desire—often overlooked or difficult to fulfill—to make use of and enjoy their leisure time.
Caring for one’s appearance is an important step in growing up and developing one’s personality. Accepting one’s appearance and becoming aware of one’s physical characteristics are important developmental tasks during adolescence.
The workshop aims to encourage young people with disabilities to take care of themselves, improving their psychological and social well-being and fostering self-esteem and personal independence. It also provides an opportunity to meet and socialize with peers.

PROGRAM STRUCTURE

The program consists of 11 three-hour sessions, held one afternoon a week between February and April 2011:
4 hairdressing workshop sessions
2 beauty workshop sessions
5 visits to the thermal pools with whirlpool facilities at the Riolo Bagni spa
Hairdressing workshop – starting in February 2011
Participants will practice assessing the scalp and hair, shampooing, and blow-drying with both flat roots and added volume.
Practical exercises will also include basic theory on the use of styling tools, the characteristics of the scalp, and the structure of hair.
Beauty workshop – starting in February 2011
In this workshop, participants will mainly practice manicure techniques, including filing nails, lifting cuticles, and applying nail polish. Facial cleansing exercises are also planned: cleansing with milk and toner, eyebrow shaping, applying scrubs, facial massage, applying masks, and finishing with cream.
Basic information on skin types and the most suitable cosmetic products will be provided. To complete the activities, the instructor will offer makeup exercises using color to enhance each participant’s face shape and features.
Sessions at the thermal pool at Terme di Riolo Bagni – April 2011
Participants will visit the thermal pools and follow every stage of the wellness program, from preparation through movement and rehabilitation activities in the water to final relaxation. The program will be led by an aquatic rehabilitation therapist and an educator, who will accompany participants both during transportation and at the pool.
This experience aims to help participants develop a better understanding and awareness of their bodies, encouraging self-care and respect for themselves and others.

TEACHING METHODS IN THE ORGANIZATION’S WORKSHOPS

The group will consist of 7–8 young people, guided by a professional hairdresser or beautician and a trainer. To promote social inclusion, the workshops will also involve selected second-year students from the CIOFS/FP beauty care course and/or students from secondary schools in Imola specializing in social care. It may be possible to award educational credits to these students.
The approach will combine practice on training mannequins with hands-on exercises in which participants take turns playing the roles of client and hairdresser or beautician.
Individualized instruction will also be provided.
The wellness program at the spa will be attended by the trainer and a therapist specializing in aquatic rehabilitation.

STAFF

The team will include a professional hairdressing instructor, a professional beauty instructor, and an aquatic rehabilitation specialist, together with a lifeguard to ensure pool safety. A trainer will be present throughout the program to monitor participants and provide educational guidance at every stage.

Young people with disabilities aged 15–20.

LOCATION AND EQUIPMENT

The inclusive workshop will take place at the CIOFS/FP premises at Via Pirandello 12 in Imola and at the Riolo Bagni spa in Riolo Terme.
The facilities and equipment used for the beauty care course will be available for the program.

PARTICIPATION FEE AND ACKNOWLEDGMENT

To encourage commitment to the course, each participant will be asked to pay a €50 enrollment fee.
At the end of the course, each participant will receive, as an acknowledgment of participation, a beauty kit containing essential personal-care accessories and a short wellness guide reviewing all the stages of the training program.
